On May 18, Li Youmei, First Vice President of Shanghai Academy, was invited to attend the Shanghai symposium marking the 200th anniversary of Karl Marx’s birth.

Zhou Huilin, Member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Shanghai Municipal Committee and Director of the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Committee, attended the symposium and delivered an important speech. He said General Secretary Xi Jinping’s important speech at the conference, to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of Karl Marx, served as a manifesto for contemporary CPC members to uphold the great banner of Marxism, and the program of action to continue to promote the Sinicization of Marxism in a new era.

The conference recognized that the Shanghai social science community should not only study and comprehend the spirit of Xi’s speech and regard it as an important political task, but also insist on studying one step further to accurately grasp the core essentials, profoundly understand the essence of the spirit, and effectively integrate ideas and actions into the spirit of the speech; Shanghai’s social science community should strengthen its sense of responsibilities and further the research and construction of Marxist Theory to strive to deepen the learning, research, education, and publicity of Marxism; Shanghai’s social science community should focus on promoting the development and theory construction of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, upgrading the building of philosophy and social sciences with Chinese characteristics and continue to expand the talent team of Marxism theory, to make Shanghai’s due contribution to the continuous progress of the sinicization of Marxism for a new era.

This symposium was co-organized by the Publicity Department of the CPC Shanghai Committee, the CPC Shanghai Committee of Education and Hygiene, the CPC History Research Center of the CPC Shanghai Committee, the Party School of the CPC Shanghai Committee, Shanghai Federation of Social Science Associations, Shanghai Academy of Social Science and the Political Science School of National Defence University of the People’s Liberation Army. The symposium was attended by more than 200 people including experts and scholars from Shanghai’s social science community, relevant leaders from the publicity department of the CPC committee of universities and Marxist colleges, and teacher representatives from the Party School system.
