On July 6, Han Fangming, President of the Charhar Institute, Baek Jongcheon, Chairman of Sejong Institute, and Park Seon Won, Consul-General of the Republic of Korea in China, led a delegation to visit Shanghai Academy, and held a Seminar on the Korean Peninsula Situation following the Trump-Kim Meeting.

After the Trump-Kim Meeting on June 12, North Korea and the US signed a joint statement, declaring that the two countries had reached agreement on 4 issues, including "complete denuclearization" in North Korea, while much space for discussion still remains for such issues as the specific process of denuclearization on the Korean peninsula, and the future development direction of the North Korea-US relationship. The seminar specially invited Chinese and South Korean diplomats and well-known experts and scholars to openly exchange views regarding the issues in relevant fields, contribute their ideas, and discuss the situation regarding the Korean peninsula.

This seminar was chaired by Zhou Hucheng, Executive Deputy Secretary General of the Charhar Institute, and Secretary-General of the Culture and Peace Committee. Li Chunguang, Deputy Director of the Cooperation Division of Shanghai Academy, and Park Seon Won delivered welcome speeches respectively. Han Fangming, and Baek Jongcheon addressed the seminar on behalf of the Chinese and the South Korean party respectively.

Li Chunguang

Li Chunguang extended a welcome on behalf of Shanghai Academy to all diplomats, experts, and scholars attending the seminar, and gave a brief introduction of Shanghai Academy. He pointed out that, as a high-level think tank, Shanghai Academy actively conducts studies in support of relevant national guidelines and policies, and the academy's research fields cover the Belt and Road and East Asian cooperations. He hoped that all attending guests would freely give their views, and jointly contribute advice and suggestions for the security of the Korean peninsula.

Park Seon Won

Park Seon Won said, China and South Korea have always maintained a very close and friendly relationship. Currently, it is a special period for the situation of the Korean Peninsula and the China-US relationship, and consultation and cooperation will help further build a friendly relationship between China and South Korea.

Han Fangming

Han Fangming pointed out that, political mutual trust is a fundamental point in international political exchange, and peace on the peninsula cannot be achieved without political mutual trust and unobstructed dialogue between relevant countries. He said, relevant parties must firmly and unswervingly adhere to the goal of denuclearization in North Korea, firmly support and never give up on the peaceful resolution of the peninsula issue, and strengthen cooperation on the basis of building a multilateral peace mechanism. He affirmed that the Charhar Institute will continue to make its own contribution to promoting China-South Korea friendship and peace in the peninsula, as always.

Baek Jongcheon

Baek Jongcheon said, he hoped that by means of the seminar, experts from various fields could conduct exchange, and on the basis of consensus make due contributions to the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula, and even in the whole of Asia,.

The discussion session consisted of two sessions, i.e. : Assessment about the Content and Achievements of the Trump-Kim Meeting, and Future Prospects for the Situation of the Korean Peninsula and Discussion of the China-South Korea Cooperation Plan. Lee Seonghyeon, Director of the Center for Chinese Studies of Sejong Institute, and Wu Sike, Member of the International Advisory Committee of the Charhar Institute, former Chinese Special Envoy for Middle East Issues, and former Chinese Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and to Egypt, gave keynote reports respectively at the sessions. Cui Zhiying, Director of the Korean Peninsula Research Office of Tongji University, Professor Kim Junhyeong from Han Dong Global University, Park Nobyeok, Secretary-general of the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) and former South Korean Ambassador to Russia, and Professor Shi Yuanhua from the Institute of International Studies, Fudan University, gave special speeches respectively.

Zhang Guobin, Secretary-general of the Charhar Institute, Seo Hyeongwon, President of Cheongam College, and former South Korean Ambassador to Croatia, Scholar Xue Chen from the Institute for International Strategic Studies, Shanghai Institute of International Studies, Mao Weizhun, Researcher at the Center for Asia-Pacific Development Studies, Nanjing University, and deputy editor-in-chief of NJU Asia-Pacific Review, and Fan Zhengqiang, Assistant Researcher of the Charhar Institute, attended the discussion.

Zhou Hucheng

In his concluding remarks, Zhou Hucheng said that the attending experts conducted sufficient exchanges from such perspectives as military options, economic and cultural cooperation, infrastructure building, and peace and security maintaining, and reached many consensuses, and he hoped that think tanks could play a greater role in promoting the solution of peninsula issues, and jointly building a peaceful and prosperous community of common destiny in North East Asia.
