On November 30, Shanghai Academy joined hands with Shanghai Municipal Expert Committee of Informatization to hold a salon themed Industrial Codes and Ethical Standards of Artificial Intelligence (AI). At the meeting, experts held a lively discussion on the development and application of AI.

Sun Mingjun, Director of the AI Department of the Cloud Computing and Big Data Research Institute at the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, was invited to give a speech at the meeting. First, he briefed the development history, three major drivers, five application conditions, future technical roadmap, games and ethics of AI; then, he explained relevant work in key areas of AI, including the classification standards on 11 kinds of AI products and AI product orientation, the evaluation and assessment on AI basic service platforms, the evaluation and planning on intelligent voice service platforms, the layout of open source platforms, the help for ecological construction and so on; finally, he also introduced the Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance and its progress in AI standardization. According to Sun, the most serious bottleneck for current development of AI lies in the DS construction and compliance problems, which were showed concretely in such areas as the short supply of accurate data, the uneven data quality, the lack of a data circulation system, the hidden danger of data security, and so on. Thus, there was an urgent need for the establishment of standards and codes in this field.

Wang Chao, doctoral supervisor of the School of Communication and Information Engineering, Shanghai University, gave a speech focusing on the ethical and moral standards of AI, and expressed that AI falls in the domain of technology, law and ethics, and also belonged to a comprehensive discipline. As early as 2014, Professor Wang had proposed that people must pay attention to robot safety. He believed that the influences of AI could be classified into three levels: first, industrial control, second, finance, and third, government decision-making. AI is a double-edged sword because of the problems with models and training data sets, which can lead to errors in ethics. Finally, he stressed that AI needs to serve humanity, and no matter how advanced the technology is, it must be completely consistent with mankind in terms of morals, values, and ethics.

During the exchanges, experts held discussions on issues concerning the application of AI in different scenes, the rapid growth and ethical problems of AI, privacy protection of the public, standard specifications on data masking, the security of AI, and so on.

The salon was attended by governmental representatives from the relevant department and divisions of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, and relevant departments of Shanghai Xuhui and Minhang district governments, as well as the business representatives from iFLYTEK, Hongshen Technology, DataCVG, Unisound, INTSIG Information and other companies.
