An academic seminar themed “The US and the World in the 21st Century” was successfully held at the Center for American Studies, Fudan University from October 30 to the morning of October 31, 2015. He Yafei, Deputy Director of the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of the State Council and former vice minister of foreign affairs, underlined the theme in a keynote speech delivered at the opening ceremony.
At the special forum of the opening ceremony, Huang Ping, President of the Chinese Society for American Studies, Cui Liru, former president of China Institute of Contemporary International Relations, Zhang Yuyan, Director of the Institute of World Economics and Politics under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), Zhu Chenghu, senior researcher from the National Defence University PLA China, Su Ge, President of China Institute of International Studies, Yang Jiemian, Director of the Academic Committee of Shanghai Institute for International Studies, Jin Canrong, Vice President of the School of International Studies, Renmin University of China, and Huang Renwei, Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, took part in a heated discussion about the visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to the US, and about China-US relations. Professor Wen Xueguo, Executive Vice President of Shanghai Academy, attended the seminar.
At the special forum of the closing ceremony, Zhang Baijia, former deputy director of the Party History Research Centre of the CPC Central Committee, Wu Xinbo, Director of the Center for American Studies, Fudan University, Wu Baiyi, Director of the Institute of Latin American Studies of CASS, Liu Jianfei, Deputy Director of the Institute for International Strategic Studies of the Central Party School of the CPC, and other scholars offered unique insights into “American studies and China-US relations”.
An audience of more than 300, comprising representatives, teachers, students, former alumni and community members, heard the wonderful academic speeches in Xie Xide Auditorium of Fudan University. The seminar was jointly sponsored by Shanghai Academy, the Chinese Society for American Studies, the Institute of American Studies of CASS, the Center for American Studies, Fudan University and the Chinese Journal of American Studies, and attracted 120-plus experts, scholars and representatives from relevant organizations.
The seminar received 27 Chinese or English academic papers with more than 500,000 words in total. Ji Weimin, Director of Secretariat of Shanghai Academy, and Yang Huijun, Director of Research Division, attended the seminar.
